Today, Filipinos all over the world are celebrating the Feast of the Santo Nino: the Christ Child who came to our land, as a gift, five hundred years ago. What can we learn from the Child Jesus? The Gospel describes to us how Jesus grew up. After being reunited with his parents in the temple in Jerusalem, he “was obedient to them… [and] advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man.” Obedience makes us listen to the other; and when we listen, we become attentive and open to what is being communicated with us. This is one of the reasons why Jesus “advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man”—because he obeyed his Father in heaven and listened to people to whom he was sent.
