Explore one of the most popular and rewarding hikes on Santa Cruz Island — the Scorpion Canyon Loop Trail in Channel Islands National Park. Starting from Scorpion Anchorage, this loop takes you through lush canyon bottoms and up to ridgeline views that showcase the island’s diverse terrain and coastal beauty. Whether you are here for the scenery, wildlife, or exercise, this hike delivers a little of everything.

The Scorpion Canyon Loop Trail is a 4.7-mile loop with about 800 feet of elevation gain, making it a moderate hike ideal for most active visitors. The trail begins near the Scorpion Ranch area, passes through native chaparral and grassland, and ascends to spectacular viewpoints overlooking the ocean. There is no food or drink available on the island, so bring plenty of water and snacks with you. Each picnic area and the campground has fox boxes — secure lockers for storing food, since the adorable but bold island foxes are known for sneaking into bags and backpacks. There is potable water only near Scorpion Anchorage (by the visitor center), so fill up before starting your hike if necessary. No cell service is available, and everything you pack in must be packed out — so plan accordingly for a true off-the-grid hiking experience.
