HIV is a serious health problem worldwide. It has caused about 40.4 million deaths so far, with ongoing spread in all countries. Some places have seen more new infections recently, even though they were decreasing before.

At the end of 2022, around 39.0 million people were living with HIV. Most of them, about 25.6 million, are in Africa. In 2022, about 630,000 people died from HIV-related reasons and 1.3 million people got HIV.

There is no cure for HIV, but with good prevention, testing, treatment, and care, including for other infections, people with HIV can live long and healthy lives.
The chance of a mother passing HIV to her child during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding can be as high as 25-30% if there's no treatment. But with steps like HIV testing, counseling, antiretroviral medicine, giving birth by cesarean section before labor starts, and avoiding breastfeeding, this kind of transmission is now less than 2% in the United States.

Using research findings to make changes in how we care for pregnant women and babies is what made this progress possible.

We still don't fully understand how HIV goes from mother to child. It might happen during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding. The biggest risk factor for this kind of transmission seems to be when the mom has advanced HIV disease, like AIDS, likely because her HIV level is high. Sadly, some pregnant women don't get tested for HIV, and others don't get much prenatal care, which can let the virus pass to the baby.
