Hålogalandsruta,
The Hålogaland Trail, is a 210 km long future trail between the two towns Narvik and Harstad in Northern Norway, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. The trail is still under design and construction.
The Southern Terminus will be the town square in Narvik and the Northern Terminus will be the town square of Harstad.
The trail goes through a very beautiful and diverse landscape. The trail brings you from sea level up to 1000 meters above sea level and gives you a jaw dropping view of the Ofoten fjord before it takes you into the mountains. It takes you from one beautiful valley to another, tons of lakes, between narrow, steep mountain peaks. You will see fjords and islands and cross the Tjeldsund bridge that separates Norway's biggest island, Hinnøya, from the mainland.
It takes you to the historical tiny navy road in Norddalen. The road was built in 1899 when the railway was built. Along the road there are many remains and foundations of the barracks, lifts and other buildings built during the time of building the railway in this steep valley.
It brings you through historic places from WWII where the Allieds, mostly Norwegians, but also English, French and Polish soldiers were fighting against Nazi Germany for two months in the rough late winter conditions. You can still see the small fortifications that were built on both sides during the fighting.
You most likely will see either single or hordes of reindeers.
Most of the trail goes above the treeline which gives you the most spectacular view of the landscape.
Today there are 11 cabinets or other accommodation possibilities along the trail. More cabins and accommodations are under planning.
The hiking seasons will be late June to mid October. During June, July and the first part of August it will be daylight 24/7 due to its location north of the Arctic Circle.
Growing up and living in Narvik, this area is a kind of back garden for me when it comes to hiking and scrambling.
During the years I´ve done a lot of short and long distance hiking in Norway, Europe, North- and South America. During these hikes I've met tons of nice hikers and I'm eager to keep on working with the trail and to present the area and the Hålogaland Trail to other hikers.
In the fall of 2022, I hiked the trail northbound from Narvik to Harstad to do some survey and documentation for the design and construction of the trail.
