The Holy Month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. During Ramadan, Muslims are expected to fast for a period of 30 days. Fasting consists of eating before sunrise and after sunset, and not in-between. Not even a sip of water is allowed for those practicing the fast on Ramadan. The morning meal enjoyed before sunrise is called suhoor while the evening break of the fast is called iftar. Here are some of the best suhoor and iftar specialties during the month of Ramadan in Turkey.
1. Güllaç Dessert
Gullaç dessert is a seasonal food that is only served during the month of Ramadan. This is what makes it special. Gullaç sheets are made of starch and water. They are soaked in sweetened milk and then chilled for a bit to soften. Layering it with crushed walnuts and topping it with nuts and pomegranate is the best way to decorate your Güllaç dessert! It is milky, fruity, and light: the best dessert for Ramadan!
2. Ramadan Pita Bread
Pide bread is one of the traditional Turkish breads like bazlama bread, street bread simit, lavash bread. Its dough is shaped by hand, dented with wet fingertips and then topped with sesame seeds. It is specially sold in bakeries during Ramadan.
3. Medjool Dates
Traditionally, on Ramadans fast is broken with a piece of date as it is believed to bring you good deed. This sweet dried fruit is high in fibre, potassium, magnesium and vitamin B-6, which makes it absolutely healthy for Ramadan when fasting may lower your immune system. Dates may be served in their natural state or stuffed with walnuts. Have a bite and you will know what type is your favorite!
4. Turkish Coffee
The favorite beverage of Turks and others alike, Turkish coffee is usually served right after dinner to help you digest what you have just eaten during Iftar. You may opt for adding some sugar so that it also serves as a tasty dessert after dinner.
