ケルトの笛で『庭の千草/The Last Rose of Summer』アイルランド民謡

「庭の千草」をティンホイッスルで演奏しました。原曲は一般的に「The Last Rose of Summer(夏の名残りのばら)」として知られていますが、旋律自体は18世紀末のアイルランド民謡「The Groves of Blarney」のメロディーで、さらにその起源として「Castle Hyde」や「The Green Woods of Truigha」など古いケルト旋律の系譜に属しています。

アイルランドの詩人トマス・ムーア(Thomas Moore)が1805年に書いた詩「The Last Rose of Summer」とあわせて、「Irish Melodies」の一曲として1813年ごろ出版されました。
咲き残った一輪のバラに失われた愛と孤独を重ねた抒情詩で、シューベルトやメンデルスゾーンをはじめ多くの作曲家がメロディを引用するなどクラシック音楽の名曲としても愛されています。

日本では明治時代に旋律だけが輸入され、恋の歌ではなく秋の情景を歌う唱歌「庭の千草」として定着。成り立ちから輸入まで経緯は「故郷の空」とほぼ同じで、当時の学校教育では恋愛歌を扱わない方針がありました。

「Irish Melodies」のコンセプトは「アイルランドの旋律に“品位ある新しい詩”を付け直して文化復権する」
どこか懐かしく感じるのは、この旋律がアイルランドを越えて世界各地をめぐりながら長い時間を旅してきた名残なのかもしれません。

I performed “The Last Rose of Summer” on the tin whistle.
The melody originates from the late 18th-century Irish folk tune “The Groves of Blarney,” which itself traces back to older Celtic airs such as “Castle Hyde” and “The Green Woods of Truigha.”

Irish poet Thomas Moore wrote the poem “The Last Rose of Summer” in 1805, and the song was published around 1813 as part of his collection “Irish Melodies.”
Its touching lyrics—comparing the last remaining rose to lost love and loneliness—have inspired many composers, including Schubert and Mendelssohn, and it remains one of the most beloved melodies in classical music.

In Japan, melodies from Moore’s Irish Melodies such as “The Last Rose of Summer” and “Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms” were introduced during the Meiji era.
Their romantic lyrics were replaced with new ones depicting natural scenes, becoming school songs like “Niwa no Chigusa” and “Haru no Hi no Hana to Kagayaku.”
A similar adaptation occurred with “Furusato no Sora,” the Japanese version of the Scottish song “Comin’ Thro’ the Rye,” as romantic songs were avoided in school education at that time.

The concept behind “Irish Melodies” was to revive Irish culture by pairing its traditional tunes with refined new poetry.
Perhaps the reason this melody feels so nostalgic is that it has traveled across centuries and borders, carrying with it the enduring soul of Ireland.
