Episode 1277

Jerry (Graham Haberfield) mends Annie’s (Doris Speed) tape recorder so she can use it for her speech exercises. Elsie (Pat Phoenix) remarks that Maggie (Irene Sutcliffe) would probably not cope with America any better than she did. Mike (Murray Kash) tells Len (Peter Adamson) that his widow woman back in the USA wants him to return. Emily (Eileen Derbyshire) continues to be curt with Rita (Barbara Knox), but Rita reassures her there is no reason to be jealous. Sybil Cudlipp (Helen Cherry) continues to criticise Annie’s style of speech-making. Mike breaks the news to Maggie that he is going back to America. Maggie hopes he might take her with him, but she realises he is giving her the brush-off. He leaves without telling her the real reason for his departure, making Maggie think Alf (Bryan Mosley) had something to do with it. Annie is fed up with Sybil’s constant criticism and dismisses her. Emily realises she has been behaving childishly and reconciles with Ernie (Stephen Hancock). Annie receives a letter from the Town Hall announcing the departing mayoress will be paying her a visit. She is horrified to find the back room in a state as it is in the process of being redecorated.
