At the 2025 Mid-America Trucking Show, the stakes were high in the Big Rig Build-Off, where three hand-built custom trucks competed for top honors. In the end, Luke Rethwisch and his stunning 1987 Peterbilt 359 took home the championship title. Built from the ground up in just six months -- starting with a frame from a wrecked 2021 Peterbilt 389 -- this truck is a testament to craftsmanship, dedication, and the Rethwisch family’s deep roots in trucking.

One of the most striking details? The truck was displayed without its wheels attached, allowing the fully chromed brake drums to take center stage. Instead of sitting on tires, the wheels were showcased separately on custom stands beside the truck, making this truck distinctly different from the others on display at MATS 2025. Custom chrome work is everywhere, from the fully polished fuel tanks to the chrome-plated engine piping. Inside, the cab features woodgrain dash panels, a reupholstered interior, and a pair of seats stitched to match the truck’s logo.

The entire build was a family effort, with Luke’s father, Bill Rethwisch -- a veritable legend in the show truck scene -- lending his expertise. Even the sign for the truck got a unique twist -- modeled after fuel pumps in honor of the family's fuel-hauling Rethwisch Transport business.
