Summer in the Scandinavian wilderness of Geilo, Norway | Solo travel vlog

This summer, I spent 3 weeks in a Norwegian town called Geilo. I took the train from Oslo and traveled 4 hours up north on the famous Bergensbanen train line, and arrived at the place where I would housesit during my stay.

I had the chance to spend some time with the owner of the place at the beginning and end of my stay, and I’m so happy for that, since we really got along and it was so inspiring to talk to a fellow Dutchie who took the leap and immigrated to Norway.

During my stay, I also met some really wonderful people. The next-door neighbour turned out to also be Dutch. She took me swimming in the lake behind the house. She was in a group of other foreigners who were also crazy enough to swim (even in July, the water temperature was around 10 degrees Celsius – that’s Norse summer for you).

Through this little ‘swimming club’, I got to know some beautiful people and it felt like the local community really took me in.

I didn’t know this beforehand, but Geilo is a famous and quite touristy place. But since I was staying at the far edge of the town, I had the best of both worlds:

It was only a 15-minute bike ride to all the accommodations I needed – including a super cozy second-hand store where I ended up buying six copper pans (of which I still can’t believe they fit in my suitcase on my journey back home to the Netherlands).

But the area where the house was located felt remote, spacious and calm, and was surrounded by beautiful Scandinavian nature. From the house, I could easily reach the most serene places: lakes, wild rivers, marshes, waterfalls, fjords, and rugged mountains.
