Mary Sibande | HOW | SHOWING THE MAKING | SO ACADEMY

Using a photograph from her own artistic archive, Sibande takes the audience through the process of building an image, its context, inherent performativity, and narrative. The event merges live music by double-bassist and composer Thembinkosi Mavimbela, and installation in a performance-based lecture around Sibande’s processes and strategies when it comes to creating new work.

While Sibande speaks to the practical and conceptual impulses and approaches that drive her work in studio, Lemaoana brings his unique perspective as a soundboard of Sibande’s and a valuable external eye to her practice, able to identify and contextualise the themes in her work, and locate them in a broader art-historical context. Also present throughout the HOW is the seamstress Pretty Nyathi who lends a further performative and sonic component to the event.

As its title suggests, HOW | Showing the Making reveals the approaches, strategies and methods employed by artists in the creation of their work. It provides audiences with the opportunity to witness how art is made, giving insight into the thinking, inspiration and techniques that shape it.
