Sitting high on a rocky summit Queribus is seen as the last of the Cather fortresses to fall. The Cathars were labelled heretics by the catholic church and the pope eventually launched a crusade to stamp out their heresy. The Cathars were gradually pushed out of fortress after fortress after long and bloody sieges. Many massacres took place of defenders of towns and chateaux even after they had surrendered. High above the surrounding plain the site of this castle is seemingly impregnable. A visit involves climbing a vertiginous stairway through succesive lines of defense to the keep, the upper floor of which offers amazing views.
