Here is my process for drawing a caricature from a photo reference.
00 I start with a quick sketch using Caran D'ache 3mm Pencil. Here I don't worry about details, just blocking in basic shapes. This segment is 4x original speed. The rest of the video is 2x original speed.
23 After the rough sketch is done, I start inking using a basic black Crayola marker. Since this is a 3/4 view, I begin with the nose, especially because in this case it is fairly prominent.
08 Typically I draw eyes before eyebrows, but because the subject is squinting a bit here, I draw the furrowed brow and eyebrows first because those features overlap the eyes themselves.
41 Now I start with the brim of the hat. Notice how my arm does most of the work for big, swooping shapes. My wrist moves very little here.
59 Time for the ears! I like to draw ears that are fairly realistic, but simplifying ear structure to be more cartoony is definitely OK too.
17 Adding the neck and some additional details.
34 Now it's time to start shading. Here I'm using cool grey Prismacolor markers. I begin using darker shades, then move to lighter shades, but starting light and building up to darker tones is a good approach too.
21 I make sure to think about where the highlights need to go (such as on the ball of the nose) and shade around those areas.
49 Now I fill in the hat. I like making clothing and accessories like hats, shirts, etc. darker to add more contrast and visual interest to the drawing.
22 Finally I go in with a lighter grey marker to make the overall shading softer.
48 Time to add my signature. Done! Thanks for watching.
