Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) - A call to action

Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) first came to prominence in the media when Bruce Willis was diagnosed with the disorder.

The origins of PPA is dementia. There are three different types: Logopenic PPA caused by Alzheimer’s Disease, Non-Fluent PPA caused by Fronto Temporal Dementia (FTD) and Semantic PPA also caused by FTD.

Unlike common dementia, what makes PPA unique, is that it begins in the language centre. It can impact your ability to talk, understand speech, read and write. As the disease progresses, it also spreads to more common dementia complaints related to memory, problem solving, planning, emotional regulation, insight and the ability to initiate.

Hundreds of thousands of people are known to have PPA around the world, but we believe the numbers are higher. PPA is a group of conditions that can often impact people under 65 (known as young onset dementia). This can be especially devastating as people can still be working and raising a family.

The goal of this video is a call to action. WE NEED TO DO MORE TO HELP PEOPLE POST DIAGNOSIS. We need specialist training of doctors, health professionals and the general public, to better help people manage this devastating group of diseases.

Please help spread the word, advocate for the rights of people to have a voice. Petition your governments and your health services. People with PPA need a central space where they can access knowledge and a community of people that understand the challenge of living with this group of conditions.
