USS California didn’t just sink at Pearl Harbor because of torpedoes—she sank because her watertight “honeycomb” was left unsealed for inspection. When two hits tore into the port side, flooding didn’t stay local; it raced through open manholes into engineering spaces, killing power and pump capacity. Within days, the ship settled into the harbor mud, still intact enough to raise—but internally connected to the sea.
The salvage of USS California became a brutal engineering puzzle: the main deck was submerged, so pumping alone would never win. Engineers built massive wooden cofferdams to raise the effective waterline, then bolted patches over jagged holes and began dewatering with ten-inch centrifugal pumps. Inside, divers faced zero-visibility fuel oil, rotting provisions, and hydrogen sulfide—a toxic atmosphere that demanded masks, ventilation, and strict monitoring.
As water came out, weight had to come off: guns, ammunition, anchors, and even the cage masts were removed to gain buoyancy. Then came the final enemy—mud suction and the deadly free-surface effect—forcing careful pumping sequences and balance corrections until USS California finally broke free and floated again on March 25, 1942. Even then, a gas-fueled explosion nearly undid everything before USS California reached drydock.
