June 19, 2023 John, Frank and Joe joined Captain Howard on RV Emma May for a combination fishing/ diving trip to several ship wrecks just outside Barnegat Inlet New Jersey. It was the last day of the spring Sea Bass season, the last day each fisherman could take a limit of 10 fish. Also, fluke were beginning to show up on the wrecks as they do every year at this time.
Unfortunately, the crew was unable to catch their limits of fish either with rod or by spear on the four wreck sites visited.
The wreck of the Chaparra, a Cuban casualty of world war 1, was sunk by a German mine laid by submarine U-117 on October 27, 1918. The wreck is broken up and is in a depth of 80 feet of water. The conditions for the dive were excellent. The ocean was calm, the visibility underwater 20 plus feet and the water temperature on the bottom was 54 degrees F.
