Writing a research paper is a lot like solving a math problem; it really boils down to knowing the right formula to use and how to use it. This course is intended to take you through the process of writing informative and persuasive essays by helping you see the many ways you already use the necessary skills for such writing in your everyday life.
The fifth episode of the series explores the beauty of taking notes. It discusses how taking notes while reading helps ensure you find the main point instead of getting lost, and offers tips on the best methods to use. It also discusses the three Rs of evaluating research material (relevance, recency, and ranking), the four types of note-taking (direct quotation, paraphrase, summarizing, and key-term notes), and the best ways to avoid accidental plagiarism. The episode also offers an overview of how to tell fact from opinion writing and how to avoid making incorrect inferences.
