The 747 (Queen of the Skies) became an instead hit with Pan Am in 1970. Dozens of other airlines followed including British Airways who had nearly 100 of the type over the decades. But once more fuel efficient twin engine aircraft like the 787 Dreamliner, 777, A350 and A330neo came out, airlines opted out.
A few airlines have the A380 to maintain high levels of capacity at Heathrow, Singapore & Dubai. Emirates keeps theirs to maintain their global hub-to-spoke model. Etihad keeps theirs to maintain prestige with products like the Residence apartment.
But for every other airline, the cost to reinvest in big planes wasn't worth the price.
