These are two of the most important streets in DC: join me as I take you on a driving tour down both of them. Pay attention to how much the architecture changes throughout the drive. On Massachusetts Avenue, we'll pass through Embassy Row which is where most embassies in DC are located.
Here's some cool history on Embassy Row:
Embassy Row in Washington, D.C., is a historic stretch of Massachusetts Avenue NW, renowned for its concentration of embassies, chanceries, and diplomatic residences. Its origins trace back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the area transformed from a quiet, rural part of the city into a prestigious residential enclave. After the Civil War, Washington’s population boomed, and wealthy industrialists, politicians, and socialites began building grand mansions along Massachusetts Avenue, drawn by its proximity to the White House and Capitol Hill. The Gilded Age saw architects like John Russell Pope and firms like McKim, Mead & White design opulent Beaux-Arts and Victorian-style homes, establishing the area as a symbol of wealth and power. By the 1920s, however, many of these families started moving out, and the Great Depression further accelerated the shift, leaving these large properties available for new purposes.
The transition of Embassy Row into a diplomatic hub began in earnest during the early 20th century, particularly after World War I, as the United States emerged as a global power. Foreign governments saw the value in establishing a presence near the heart of American politics, and the grand mansions—too costly for most private owners to maintain—proved ideal for embassies and diplomatic offices. One of the first major embassies to settle in the area was the British Embassy, which moved to Massachusetts Avenue in 1931, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Other nations followed, including Italy, Ireland, and Japan, each bringing their own architectural flair to the street. The area’s diplomatic character solidified during and after World War II, as the U.S. took on a more prominent role in international affairs, and by the mid-20th century, Embassy Row had become synonymous with global diplomacy in Washington.
Today, Embassy Row spans roughly from Dupont Circle to Observatory Circle, encompassing over 70 embassies and diplomatic missions, alongside cultural institutions like the Phillips Collection and the Islamic Center of Washington. The street is not just a functional space but a cultural and social one, where embassies host events, receptions, and national day celebrations, offering a glimpse into their countries’ traditions. Architecturally, it remains a showcase of diversity, blending historic mansions with modern designs like the glass-and-steel Finnish Embassy. While the area is a tourist draw—especially during events like the annual "Passport DC" festival, when embassies open their doors to the public—it also reflects the evolving nature of diplomacy, adapting to security needs and international relations. Embassy Row stands as a living testament to Washington’s growth from a modest capital to a global political stage.
