In an exclusive conversation with STIR, the Oscar-nominated and ADG Award-winning production designer of Christopher Nolan's magnum opus 'Oppenheimer' talks about her accounts of erecting a town in the middle of the desert, building from scratch upon years of research, and turning “naivety” into a Nolan epic. True to his directorial style, Nolan forbade the use of green screens, visual effects, and set extensions, to induce immersion and heightened realism in his telling of the Oppenheimer story, posing unique but exciting challenges De Jong and her team who consciously worked towards moving away from the genre trappings of a period film to create sets that felt authentic but minimal and 'time'less. The film is now the winner of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Cinematography.
