Julius Baker and Harriet Wingreen in 1983 in a live performance of Walter Gieseking's Sonatine 1st movement. The great Julius Baker was 68 at the time. Even at that age, Baker's incredible sound and musicality is evident.
This 1st movt. in particular has Baker playing with a huge variety of tone color, varied expression, and his most musical rubato. I think this live recording shows what he sounded like better than many of the studio recordings, some of which sound like they were made in very dead acoustical studios.
That being said, hearing Baker play live was awe inspiring, recordings have never captured the impression his sound made. It was just so big, warm, lush and expressive. I heard him in two very dead spaces that I had played in myself, the Macpherson Theater in Victoria, and the recital hall in Banff. They were both pretty awful stages to play on. The MacPherson in particular, an old 800 seat theater has one of those multi use stages with a huge space above the stage. One has the feeling of playing in a dead hall and getting no feedback. No matter; Baker sounded full and rich, where others sound thin and weak.
