Can a simple symbol extinguish hatred and heal a suffering nation?. In 14th-century Italy, amidst the Black Death, a young nobleman plunged into the heart of the plague to care for the dying. This encounter with mortality transformed Bernardine into the great "Apostle of Italy".
Saint Bernardine of Siena (1380–1444) famously raised the radiant IHS monogram, calling divided city-states to reconciliation. His mission was marked by wonders: a star shining in broad daylight and the miracle of tongues, allowing foreigners to understand him as if in their own language. He declined the episcopate three times to remain a poor friar, eventually choosing the bare ground for his final breath. Even in death, his body performed the miracle of flowing blood to reconcile feuding factions.
His legacy remains a living gift of humility and the power of the Holy Name. Today, he is considered for the title of Doctor of the Church.
