Why Biblical Peace Means Wholeness, Justice, and Reconciliation

What if the “peace” Jesus brings isn’t about calm feelings or avoiding conflict, but about wholeness, justice, restoration, and making things right?

In this Advent Week 2 message, Adrianne Hays leads us through the biblical idea of shalom, a peace far deeper than the world’s absence-of-conflict definition. From Isaiah’s prophecy of the Prince of Peace, to the harsh reality of the Roman Empire, to Jesus’ call for us to become peacemakers, this sermon explores what true peace actually looks like.

Drawing from Isaiah 9, Luke 4, John 14, Romans 12, the Sermon on the Mount, and the story of Scripture, we explore:

✨ 1. Peace in the Bible is Shalom

Not calm. Not silence.
Shalom = completeness, wholeness, well-being, restored relationships.

✨ 2. Jesus enters a world under a false peace

The Pax Romana promised order, but at the cost of oppression, violence, and fear.
Jesus came with a different kind of kingdom.

✨ 3. The Gospel is God restoring shalom

From Eden’s brokenness to Jesus’ incarnation, God is healing the fractures between Himself, humanity, and creation.

✨ 4. Peacemakers are God’s family

“Blessed are the peacemakers.”
We are called to repair relationships, fight injustice, restore unity, and bring wholeness wherever we go.

✨ 5. Peace is communal, not individual

Shalom involves family, community, systems, and creation itself.
If one part suffers, all suffer.

✨ 6. Peace is active, not passive

Shalom looks like:
– Repairing a strained relationship
– Caring for the least of these
– Fighting injustice in our neighborhoods and cities
– Providing for those in need
– Working to make sad things come untrue

This is the kind of peace Jesus gives, “not as the world gives.”
And during Advent, we both wait for and participate in this shalom.
