This really beautiful historic building was built in the late 1890s. It was called The Austin House Hotel. It was built by brothers John and Patrick Harrigan, replacing a smaller hotel known as the McNulty House. In 1977, the building was purchased by Art Smith and renamed the Lakeside Hotel, a tribute to the nearby Lakeside Park. It was also designated as a heritage property in 1980 because of it's historical and architectural significance. In 2004, the property ended in a development controversy. Multiple developers came and went, with proposals that were met with public opposition and official appeals. It started because of a proposal of a 20-storey glass tower, which was later increased to 27 storeys. These plans were strongly opposed by the community due to their scale and impact on the Port Dalhousie lakefront. In 2009 Ontario's Municipal Board (now the Ontario Land Tribunal). Approved a 17-storey condo after 71 days of hearings, but the project never came to fruition. In 2017 a developer called Fortress filed an application for the "Union Waterfront master plan," which proposed to renovate the heritage buildings on the site while constructing a new residential tower. The years-long battle came to an end in 2022, when a settlement was reached between the city, the Port Dalhousie Conservancy, and the developer, Rankin Construction. Who made new plans for the site, called "The Locks," which involves renovating the existing heritage buildings and relocating the historic Port Dalhousie jail.
