In this video I attempt to give some insight into what hardware you need to run pfSense and how you can arrange it in a home network.
I didn't mention disks. In reality you can run pfSense on a hard drive, SSD, or even a USB flash drive, however I recommend an HDD or SSD as you can use it for cache and logging. USB drives would require you to turn those features off to reduce writes. Since pfSense is less than 1GB, you can use pretty much any drive you can find.
Also note that starting with pfSense 2.5, you will need a CPU that supports the AES-NI instruction set.
