Counterconditioning trailer loading

Trailer loading can be a tough one...
I think it's important to remember that trailer loading is likely aversive in nature for many horses:
they are loaded into a small, dark space
they don't know where they're going or if they're coming back
there may be lots of noises from the trailer, the road, traffic, etc
it may be physically uncomfortable due to the confined space, road conditions, etc
if they have a diagnosed or undiagnosed pain issue, multiply how aversive this all might be!
There's also the issue that we cannot always control how aversive or not the experience is for a horse, which makes it very difficult to build positive associations.
I recommend focusing as much as possible on changing a horse's affect towards the trailer FIRST before increasing our criteria. If we raise our criteria too high, we are likely further increasing the aversive nature of the trailer rather than lessening it.
Another important thing to remember is that, when counterconditioning, we are creating a conflict within the horse. So we must be hyper aware of our horse's conflict and/or appeasement behaviors. If our horse's affect toward the trailer isn't improving steadily, then we need to change our plan and/or execution of the plan.
