The Owl Life

Barn Owl – Known for its heart-shaped face and ghostly white feathers; hunts mostly at night using sharp hearing.

Snowy Owl – Large white owl found in the Arctic; famous from Harry Potter (Hedwig); loves open, snowy areas.

Great Horned Owl – Has big ear tufts (“horns”) and yellow eyes; powerful hunter of rabbits and even skunks.

Barred Owl – Brown and white stripes (“bars”) on its chest; makes the call “Who cooks for you?”

Eastern Screech Owl – Small owl that blends perfectly with tree bark; makes a trilling or whinnying sound.

Burrowing Owl – Lives in holes in the ground instead of trees; often seen standing tall in open grasslands.

Elf Owl – World’s smallest owl, only about 5 inches tall; lives in cactus holes in the desert.

Spotted Owl – Dark brown with white spots; found in old forests of North America; a rare and protected species.

Long-eared Owl – Slim owl with tall ear tufts; often hides in dense trees and hunts in open fields.

Short-eared Owl – Has small ear tufts and flies during the day; found in grasslands and marshes worldwide
