The Day America Raided Whitehaven – A Local Tells the Story
Did a future American naval hero really raid this quiet British harbour?
We meet up with our good friend Paul from the YouTube channel That'll Do, who gives us a guided tour of his hometown — Whitehaven, on the Cumbrian coast.
We start at the marina, once the second-busiest port in England, and learn how this harbour played a surprising role in global trade and American history. At the ‘End of an Era’ monument, we begin to uncover the story of John Paul Jones, a Scottish-born sailor who would become the founding father of the United States Navy — and who led a daring raid on Whitehaven in 1778.
From the story of Wellington Pit to the layout of Whitehaven’s American-style grid system, this episode is packed with unexpected tales — including one very personal to us: the time Keith broke his wrist in Whitehaven.
Paul is not only a YouTuber — he’s also a presenter on CFRM Radio, Whitehaven’s community station. Check it out here: https://www.cfrmradiowhitehaven.com
If you enjoy hidden British history, forgotten raids, and local legends, this is the episode for you.
