HEUTE EINE GEISTERSTADT - DER BERÜHMTESTE ZIRKUS DER WELT: hier leben noch 25 Menschen 🔎 Lost Place

Nur wenige Kilometer vom Zentrum einer spanischen Großstadt entfernt befinden sich die größtenteils verlassenen Einrichtungen eines ehrgeizigen Projekts, der Zirkus von Benposta, auch bekannt als die Stadt der Jungen, gegründet in den 1950 Jahren von Pater Silva, der selbst Teil einer Zirkusfamilie war. Die Idee des Vaters bestand darin, eine eigene Stadt zu gründen, ein demokratisches Land auf der Grundlage katholischer Prinzipien, eingebettet in eine von der Franco-Diktatur unterdrückte Gesellschaft. Ihre Protagonisten sollten Kinder sein, die zukünftigen Bürger einer neuen besseren Welt, in der jeder die gleichen Rechte hätte und durch sein Engagement an der Gestaltung dieser Gesellschaft teilnehmen würde.

Zu diesem Zweck gründeten sie ihre eigenen Institutionen: einen Supermarkt, eine Bank mit einer eigenen Währung, Werkstätten, eine Kapelle und sogar ein kleines Rathaus. Die Stadt hatte mehr als 1000 Einwohner unterschiedlichen Alters, unterschiedlicher Rassen und unterschiedlicher Religionen, doch ihr Herzstück – das was alle vereinte - war das Zirkuszelt, durch das sie nicht nur in Spanien Berühmtheit erlangten und deshalb mit ihrem Programm auf große Welttournee gingen. Die Ziele waren klar: sie wollten überall wo sie hin kamen, Freude und Unterhaltung verbreiten und mit den Einnahmen aus den Shows Gelder für die Institution sammeln. Viele Jahre war der Knabenzirkus unterwegs, auf Tournee durch Amerika, Europa und Asien – von New York über Paris nach Tokio – insgesamt traten sie in mehr als 80 Ländern weltweit auf. Als sie schließlich nach Spanien zurückkehrten, waren sie Berühmtheiten, doch den Tod von Pater Silva Anfang des neuen Jahrtausends überlebte die Zirkusschule nicht. Niemand fühlte sich in der Lage, die Leitung eines solchen Projekts zu übernehmen, dazu kamen Schulden von mehr als drei Millionen Euro, die der Jugendzirkus über Jahrzehnte angehäuft hatte.

Just a few kilometers from the center of a major Spanish city lie the largely abandoned facilities of an ambitious project: the Circus of Benposta, also known as the City of Youth. It was founded in the 1950s by Father Silva, who himself came from a circus family. His idea was to establish a city of its own—a democratic country based on Catholic principles, embedded in a society suppressed by the Franco dictatorship. The protagonists were to be children, the future citizens of a new and better world, in which everyone would have the same rights and contribute to the shaping of this society through their commitment.
To this end, they created their own institutions: a supermarket, a bank with its own currency, workshops, a chapel, and even a small town hall. The city had more than 1,000 residents of different ages, races, and religions, but its heart—the element that united them all—was the circus tent. Through it, they not only gained fame in Spain but also went on a major world tour with their program. Their goals were clear: wherever they went, they wanted to spread joy and entertainment and use the proceeds from the shows to raise funds for the institution. For many years, the boys' circus toured through the Americas, Europe, and Asia—from New York to Paris to Tokyo. In total, they performed in more than 80 countries worldwide. When they finally returned to Spain, they were celebrities. But after Father Silva's death in the early 2000s, the circus school did not survive. No one felt capable of taking over the leadership of such a project, and on top of that, the youth circus had accumulated more than three million euros in debt over the decades.
