Sasaki Sensei (The first name of Sasaki sensei is not 大和 but 虚室 : 佐々木虚室
) from 松楽 in Kameoka, grants us the amazing privilege of showing all the steps needed in order to create a japanese black raku tea bowl. The Raku technique in Japan has nothing to do with what westerners refers to when they make "raku".

1) Take 1kg of a mix of Shigaraki soil and X (no chamotte is needed)

2) Shape it roughly (wait a bit to create the foot)

3) Keep in a vinyl from one week to 10 days so that it loses 50g of water (the bowl is then 950g)

4) Shape it finely by using tools (make your owns). The bowl is then 350g.

5) Dry it one night in an oven around 850 degrees C to remove any humidity

6) Apply, with a brush, four coatings (wait that each coating dries before applying the next one) made from crush stones (there's no more stones from Kamogawa but some stones from X are exactly the same) and glass powder (http://goo.gl/IhhTld ). The coating looks violet.

7) While heating the oven to 1100 degrees Celsius, dry the bowl on it (around 2h ?) to remove traces of humidity.

8) Fire the bowl for 3-5mn (around 3). Cool it down (after waiting 30s to 1mn) in a bucket of water.

9) One trick to create interesting colors in the black external textures of the bowl after the firing is to "paint" it with thick macha (leaving one night and wash it of course after that). Some tea powder will stay in the small holes of the bowl and will turn reddish brown

10) If you want to fire the bowl in a traditional (and costly way) you need a coal oven inside which you'll put a one-time "moufle" (muffle) (you can see one made in the video around 35mn) made from different soils mixed with straws so that the bowl is fired in a reduction chamber (lack of oxygen)

Sasaki Sensei de 松楽 (Shoraku) situé à Kameoka nous fait le privilège exceptionnel de nous montrer toutes les étapes requises pour la création d'un bol à thé japonais en Raku. La technique japonaise raku n'a rien à voir avec ce que les occidentaux appellent "Raku".

1) Pour un bol, prendre 1kg d'un mélange de terre de Shigaraki et de X (pas besoin de terre chamottée)

2) Former le bol dans les grandes lignes sans tour (attendre un peu pour créer le pied)

3) Laisser sécher une semaine à dix jours dans un vinyl pour faire perdre 50g d'humidité (le bol pèse alors 950g)

4) Sculpter le bol finement en utilisant des outils (que vous pouvez fabriquer vous-même. Le bol pèse alors 350g. C'est essentiellement le bol qui bouge sur le tour, pas les kanna (lames). La partie basse autour du pied, qui ne sera pas couverte d'engobe, est grattée afin de laisser apparaître la texture de la terre.

5) Le sécher (biscuiter) une nuit (7h) dans un four à 850 degrés.

6) Appliquer au pinceau, quatre couches d'émail composé de poudre de pierre et de verre (il n'y a plus de pierre de Kamogawa mais des pierres identiques existent à X) (http://goo.gl/IhhTld ). L'émail a une couleur violette.

7) Lors du chauffage du four qui doit monter à 1100 degrés, faire sécher dessus (pendant 2h) les bols pour retirer toute trace d'humidité.

8) Cuire le bol entre 3 et 5mn (plus 3 que 5). Le laisser refroidir entre 30s et 1mn et le plonger dans un sceau d'eau.

9) Une astuce pour créer des couleurs intéressantes sur la surface externe du bol noir consiste à le "peindre", une fois fini, avec du koicha (macha épais) qu'on laisse sécher une nuit. Après lavage, du thé restera dans les interstices de la texture et prendra une teinte rouge-marron.

10) Si vous voulez cuire le bol avec la façon la plus traditionnelle (et coûteuse), vous avez besoin d'un four à charbon dans lequel vous mettrez une mouffle à usage unique créée avec un assemblage de terres et pailles (on peut en voir une dans la vidéo autour de 35mn). Le bol sera alors cuit en réduction (privé d'oxygène).
