January 1968.
Film of the major port city of Port Harcourt in the former Eastern Region of Nigeria and claimed by the scessionist state of Biafra. Seven months after the start of the conflict, the city, which now resided in Biafran-held territory, was largely calm despite recent air raids and the threat of a Nigerian military assault. The Federal army's 3 Marine Commando under the command of Colonel Benjamin Adekunle had captured the coastal city of Bonny in July 1967. This gave the Federal side control of the main river leading to the city.
Port Harcourt was an important oil terminal, port and trading city. After the division of states announced by the Nigerian Head of State, Major General Yakubu Gowon, it was named as the capital of the Rivers State.
