There are many advantages of owning your own plane. Being able to take it out for a flight any time weather permits, going anywhere you’d like, and staying as long as you want at some far-off destination.
And being a Flight Instructor, you have one additional benefit.
When your flight student cancels on you last minute, just before you’ve arrive at the airport, you can make the best of the situation to take your own plane up for a short flight.
And that is exactly what I did today.
I jumped at the opportunity to take my Super Cub out for some calm wind early morning flying, and doing some takeoff and landing practice, in preparation for my upcoming trip to Alaska.
I’m headed to Alaska in just a few weeks, and have some Super Cub flights already scheduled with a couple of Alaska pilot legends. The purpose of the flights is to give me the opportunity to do some backseat instructional flight training, with pilots sitting in the front seat that have a wealth of experience in Super Cubs. The end goal is for me to be able to offer tailwheel endorsements in tandem tailwheel aircraft going forward.
So, I made lemonade out of lemons today with the last-minute student cancellation, and in particular did some fine tuning on both my 3 point and wheel landings. Though I don’t appreciate last minute cancellations, particularly when I get up at 5:30 in the morning to support a student’s training request. I understand things can occasionally happen, and when it does, it’s best to roll with it.
