How do games create realistic fog? And why does Silent Hill 2’s remake look so good?
In this video, I explore different ways to create fog in games—from simple shading tricks in Unity to advanced volumetric fog, like in the Silent Hill 2 remake. But here’s the catch: volumetric fog is an FPS killer and a nightmare to implement. So, after struggling with shaders, raymarching, and nearly setting my MacBook on fire, I had to find another way.
Turns out, the original Silent Hill 2 had a genius trick to work around console limitations, and I decided to recreate that effect using a particle system with layered fog. The result? A lightweight, dynamic fog that actually works for my horror game.
