Why Canada’s Visa Is Becoming a Death Trap for Indian Students
Recent violence against Indian students in Canada has sparked serious safety concerns following multiple fatal incidents. Earlier this month, 20-year-old doctoral student Shivank Avasthi was shot and killed near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. Emergency responders found Avasthi with gunshot wounds on Highland Creek Trail where he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are investigating the case as a homicide but the suspects fled the area prior to their arrival. A disturbing rise in violent crimes against Indian students in Canada has emerged throughout 2024 and 2025 causing alarm among the diaspora and diplomatic circles. While earlier incidents were often isolated the recent surge in fatal shootings and targeted attacks suggests a shifting security landscape for international students. Canadian government attribute this trend to a complex mix of factors including increasing gang activity in major urban centers like Toronto and Vancouver where students often work late-night shifts in high-risk zones. Additionally economic strain and a housing crisis have fueled local tensions and online anti-immigrant rhetoric which some experts believe is contributing to a hostile environment.
