In the thumb of Michigan's mitten is a barn whose owner called his "air palace". The Thumb Octagon Barn was built in the 1920s ostensibly to house his small herd of beef cattle, the family dairy cow and some horses. But instead of building a modest structure to serve his needs, James Purdy built a barn 70-feet tall and 120 feet wide. Each of the 8 sides measures 42 feet wide and 24 feet tall. You have to see it to believe it.
