PALACE of CULTURE and SCIENCE
The construction of the Palace of Culture and Science, under the supervision of the Soviet architect Lev Rudnev, began on May 1, 1952 and took only three years. About 3,500 workers from the USSR and 4,000 from Poland were involved in the construction. The building was opened on July 21, 1955, and more than 40 million bricks and 26,000 tons of steel were used in the construction.
The Palace of Culture and Science was built as a gift from the Soviet people to the Polish people. The above-mentioned architect Lev Rudnev created five designs, the last of which was chosen by the Poles.
On the first day after the opening, July 22, 1955, the Palace was visited by 20,000 people. In 2007, the building was included in the register of monuments.
At 237 m tall, the Palace of Culture and Science was the second tallest building in Europe when it was completed (it currently ranks 19th)
The Palace of Culture and Science has 46 floors, including two underground floors, and 3,288 rooms with a total floor area of 123,084 square meters. The Palace of Culture and Science houses a variety of institutions, including theaters, cinemas, museums, and universities. It also houses a swimming pool, which underwent its first modernization since its opening a few years ago. The palace building also houses the Warsaw City Council.
The Millennium Clock, which adorns the 40th floor of the building, was unveiled on December 31, 2000, by then-mayor Paweł Piskorski. Each of the palace clock's four dials is 6 m in diameter, making it the third largest clock in Europe.
