Located just south of Wollongong, this is the Nolan Street level crossing at Unanderra. This neat little installation has the sad honor of being the last crossing on the South Coast Line (Sydney - Wollongong - Bomaderry) to have mechanical bells. All other crossings (including the nearby Princes Hwy crossing) have now been fitted with Western Cullen Hayes electronic bells.
These gated signals were installed on August 14, 1994 when they replaced the original gate-less signals. Both signals have exactly the same equipment....
Unmarked bases.
Western Cullen Hayes gate mechanisms.
Harmon counterweight arms.
United Group lights, mounted on Alstom junction boxes.
Western Cullen Hayes mechanical bells.
The bell on the eastern signal rings from start up until the gates rise, while the western bell only rings until the gates have lowered. The pedestrian crossing was added in the late 1990's and has Magnetic Autocontrol swing gates with Aldridge "don't walk" lights.
The relay bungalow is the original one from the gate-less signals, although another relay case has been added to accommodate additional equipment.
The freight train shown in the video is 3938 flour train from Narrandera to Bomaderry via Robertson, with locomotives 8103 and 8150.
Filmed on September 10, 2017.
