Clouds
For my Dad his soul now free to soar the heavens. 1920-2010. Every rain drop but a tear full of happy memories.
Some things I would like to share with you today to show you what type of Dad he was.
When I was young I asked what medals he had from the war. He then told me this when he was demobbed he was informed he was entitled to some, he checked first if their was any pension in involved prudent as ever. When he found he was entitled to campaign medals the Atlantic Star being on and another because he was in India might have been the Burma Star. He declined as he thought they were for the men who were in the thick of things not for him who was safely nowhere near the action.
I think I was about 13 before I heard before I heard a bad word at home. After coming back from a holiday at Grans in Staffordshire with a terrific pain in my tummy.
Dad gave me a hot peppermint to drink and said "have a big fart and your feel much better"
I know it's tame by today's standards but to me it was a revelation. Dad used a rude word. This upbringing has stood in good stead even after 12 years in R.A.F. and 20 odd years in factories unsuitable language doesn't come natural, to such extent the cleaner lady in one factory was in stitches when I occasional lapsed she would say " it sound so posh when you swear" Thanks Dad for teaching me right and wrong, causing merriment all round to my embarrassment when I slipped from your high standards.
Dad was always ready to help others if he could when as bakers rounds man he would think nothing of chopping up some fire wood for one old lady on his round. Even laying the fire on the odd occasion. Another would leave a note Alf could you put the rice pudding the oven, he often wonder what would happen if hadn't called at his 11 o clock time regular time. These were times in the country keys were left in obvious places. Only being locked when you were out to stop the wind blowing the doors open.
I will miss him terribly of course but If I follow his example I shouldn't go far wrong.
