MTA Staten Island Railway R211S Tottenville Express Train Ride from Saint George to Tottenville

Footage onboard an R211S set on the Staten Island Railway's Tottenville Express service from Saint George to Tottenville, on the inaugural day of R211S service. The Staten Island Railway is separated from the rest of the NYC Subway system, and is the only passenger rail line on Staten Island. As a result it is also the southernmost train service in both NYC and NY State. It is also one of several NYC rail services which operates independently from other rail routes while in service , the others being the (7) , (L) , along with Times Square & Franklin Avenue (S) service. The route connects with the Staten Island Ferry at Saint George, and runs south & west along various Mid-Island and South Shore neighborhoods. The portion south of Eltingville runs through some of the most remote sections of the borough and NYC, many sections being located adjacent to parks and forests.

The R211S is the first new train on Staten Island after over 50 years, when the R44s arrived in the early 1970s. At that time there were many railfans out, and riders also had many comments about the new trains. There were some delays on the trip because of issues with setting up the signage on the train. The announcements got out of sync after Great Kills and had to be reset. Currently there is one train set out, and another train set (seen in the video as well) will enter service soon as well. Eventually those R211S trains will replace the R44s.
