Another AMAZING camp spot in KYRGYZSTAN! - The Way Overland - Episode 67

The drive to Osh continues as we set off from our incredible camp spot next to Lake Toktogul. We’ve got a little under 300km to get to Osh and not only was the weather turning it on for us, the scenery was absolutely amazing as we followed the Naryn River southwest.

Lake Toktogul is actually a hydroelectric and irrigation reservoir which was created in 1976 when the Kementub Valley was flooded by the creation of the 215 metres high dam wall. The reservoir flooded over 26,000 hectares of land, of which 26 communities were displaced and the main road through was re-routed.

Upon doing some research on the reservoir we actually realised that we’d driven over the Naryn River hundreds of kilometres earlier, although just a little trickle at that stage!

Arriving in Osh we desperately needed to restock the Troopy before heading out to camp again so first things first, grocery shopping. Basically the size of an IKEA store (and oddly the same colours), the supermarkets here are well stocked. A standard display is each grocery store in Kyrgyzstan is vodka, and a lot of it!

About 10kms south of the city we ventured up the surrounding hills to find somewhere to camp. With incredible views in all directions and no one around*, we set up for the night and enjoyed the sunset. It was so lovely that we decided to stay a couple of days!

Time to head off again, we continued driving towards the Tajikistan border. Not being in a rush, we drove about 100km east of Osh to a good quality service station (Gazprom) to fill the tanks up. We bought a 20L jerry can here for the Pamir Highway and Uzbekistan. Not completely necessary though having the 200L on board would allow us to drive from Tajikistan all way through Uzbekistan to Turkmenistan without filling up. This would save the potential trouble with trying to haggle for diesel on the black market in Uzbekistan. After having a delicious local meal for dinner we found somewhere to camp just out of the town for the night.
