Supreme Court Questions Centre on Sonam Wangchuk's Detention ||

On October 6, 2025, the Supreme Court asked the Union government to consider sharing the grounds of preventive detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk with his wife, Dr. Gitanjali Angmo, who has filed a habeas corpus plea.

Mr. Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA), 1980, following protests in Leh on September 24. The Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria issued notice to the Centre and Ladakh administration, posting the next hearing for October 14.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Dr. Angmo, argued that she couldn’t challenge the detention without knowing the grounds, while Solicitor General Tushar Mehta maintained that the law only requires informing the detainee himself.
