Subscribers are not important, here's why

What is more important on YouTube than subscribers? views, comments or likes?

The YouTube algorithm looks at patterns in viewing behavior, like “what did viewers watch in the past, did they watch the video all the way to the end”, “viewers interested in this topic, are probably also interested in that topic”.
Look at YouTube shorts for example, that is purely based on: can you keep viewers in the video?

And I will go a step further by saying that subscribers are a vanity metric, that give creators creators bragging rights.
I will explain why I say that, in a minute.

Why likes are more important
So what is even more important than subscribers on YouTube? I would say Likes.

Although likes are a ranking factor, it is only a teeny tiny amount in the grand scheme of things.
If you have a lot of dislikes, it won’t automatically influence your videos’ promotion.
Likes is just one of the hundreds of factors that YouTube looks at.

Because what tells the algorithm more about if viewers REALLY like a video?
• When they watch a video all the way through
• Or when they click a button with a thumb?

Why comments are more important
Even more important than likes are: comments
But, just like with Likes, it is just one of the hundreds of factors YouTube uses to determine a videos’ promotion.
YouTube, like any other Social Media network loves engagement.

Why views are important
Out of these 4 options (Subscribers, views, comments or likes), I would say that views are the more important than subscribers.

The reason that I said that subscribers are a vanity metric, is because the amount of subscribers says only that you enticed viewers to click on a button in the past, but says nothing about how well you are currently doing with your audience.

what would be more useful for YouTube?
• viewers that clicked on a “subscribe”-button 5 years ago and don’t watch the content or
• viewers that return and watch every single video of a creator and getting ad revenue? (without clicking a subscribe-button)

Viewers-not-watching videos literally takes up valuable space on YouTube Home and Suggested that they could used for a video that viewers actually DO watch and YouTube earns ad revenue on.
