I have a few goals for the new year but a big one is to start writing a band piece. I've been wanting to write one for a while so I took the opportunity last semester to study instruments, especially the ones I haven't written for yet. The first group of instruments I needed to tackle was the Brass section. I decided to do this by writing for a Brass Quintet and exploring the different ways the instruments can be expressive while also exploring each instrument's uniqueness. This is the first piece I wrote in preparation for the band piece and I'm currently working on a percussion piece and eventually will tackle a woodwind quintet piece. I'm super excited to work hard this year on composition and starting the groundwork for the band piece. I already have an idea for the piece but I don't want to rush it so it will most likely be a really slow process as I learn how to navigate writing. I hope I can share a progress update about the piece by the end of this year. Thanks for listening and until next time! : )
