We're flying towards a VOR ... how do we know when we've reached it? Many VOR's (not all) have a feature called DME, Distance Measurement Equipment. If our plane has a DME receiver it will display the distance in Nautical Miles towards the DME transmitter. This distance includes our height, so it will even not show as 0 when we're straight above.
