We love to get out of the house and just move around to find new places. We knew there was some kind of celebration going on in La Matanza and La Victoria and we wanted to check it out. Going to the market in Tenerife turns out to be always a joyous encounter with local life, some music, and dancing. Also, the fruits are delicious! I think the vegetables, cheese, and meat are of better quality than in stores. So, we did some grocery and walked around the chestnut festival market. Those chestnuts on an open fire are really tasty.
Min: La Matanza (The Slaughter). Do you know how they say ‘history is written by the victors’? This is the case of ‘The Slaughter”, the place where the Spaniards were defeated by the Guanches in the 15th century. Since they got beaten really bad, they called the place La Matanza, and, when they won, they got to brag about it naming the village, La Victoria. Both are very nice, quiet villages in Northern Tenerife. A 15 minutes drive on the highway, in opposite directions, would take you to both Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz. Like in all villages here, you can find everything you need: banks, public schools, sports and seniors’ centers, parks, shopping areas… So, living in a small community may not be a bad idea, considering the lower prices of houses, both for rent and for sale.
La Victoria is closer to La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz. La Orotava is one of the most beautiful pueblos on the island. It used to be, together with Puerto de la Cruz, the hub of Tenerife, with all ships harboring here, very vivid, very prosperous. The old city takes you on an amazing journey in time, architecture, and vegetation.
We love the microclimates in Tenerife. If it is too hot in Santa Cruz, we go further North. 10 to 20 minutes later, we would find shade and even drops of rain in La Laguna, or on the way up to Teide Volcano.
Teide National Park feels like time traveling. From lavish vegetation to moon-like scenery, incredible trails through shady forests, and literally head in the clouds, this is a drive we never get bored of. We’ve climbed the cable car to the highest station and are looking forward to booking a trip (only by foot) to the top. We’d also be very curious about the stargazing experience which we hope to live in soon.
