In this video, I demo my 1962 Gibson Melody Maker, a true vintage survivor with plenty of honest wear, player’s patina, and one tasteful mod that brought it back to life. A previous owner routed the body to replace the original single-coil with a Gibson P-90, and I later upgraded it with a better-sounding, modern Gibson P-90 to really let the guitar shine.

You’ll hear how it plays live in the room, raw and unfiltered—and then I take it into the studio, properly recorded so you can hear it sit in a mix. This one’s light, loud, and full of mojo.

The Gibson Melody Maker launched in 1959 as an affordable student guitar, built with a slim mahogany body and a single straight-ahead pickup. Despite its entry-level roots, many pro players found the Melody Maker’s light weight and snappy tone perfect for garage rock and punk. By 1962, it had adopted a sleek double-cut body and thin neck profile. Though originally outfitted with a narrow single-coil, modded examples like this one—featuring a P-90—bring out even more tonal muscle.
