Blueberry in Georgia is replacing tea and is the most profitable berry subsidised by government

In 2020 Georgia has quadrupled blueberry exports and area of these berries in 2021 is expected to exceed 1,000 ha replacing tea.

The main blueberry market is Russia, but exporters are working hard to diversify exports. The Middle East and the EU countries are the key target markets besides Russia.

Bluberries are mostly grown in west Georgia regions: Samegrelo, Guria, Adjara and Imereti due to acidic soils in these regions. Farmers are attracted by high blueberry prices on the export markets and government’s subsidies under the "Plant the Future" program.

There are many small and a few large-scale growers, but large producers and traders lead the market. Unlike small growers, large farmers invest into post-harvest handling, traceability, certification, and workers’ environment. They already have Global G.A.P. certificates, facilities to pre-cool, sort, package, and store blueberries.

Blueberry is one of the key horticultural export products for Georgia and the fastest growing export category. Growers and exporters consider the size and the "Bloom", the white coating covering the blueberries, as the most important quality indicators on the foreign markets.

Georgia starts picking blueberries in May, which gives local producers an advantage over competitors in the region and helps get better prices.

One of the most widely spread blueberry varieties in Georgia is Legacy but more and more farmers are choosing other varieties lately.

In 2021 blueberry season in Georgia got delayed by around one week. Despite the late season, first berries were sold at a high price. However, prices fell sharply towards the end of the season due to increased supply of blueberries on the Russian market from Serbia as well as because of the panic caused by new regulations in Russia regarding pesticide use, imposed on June 29.

Difficulties pushed exporters to find alternative markets this year. As a result, Georgian blueberry was sold for the first time to Germany and Bulgaria in 2021. Growers are open for new deals in the future as blueberry harvest increases every year in Georgia.
