Vignettes are a compositional device that can be very useful to artists. A vignette is a focus on the subject with the surrounding area blurring into a white or black. The painted area forms its own shape within the composition. Vignetting the composition focuses the viewer’s attention on the important parts of the piece and leaves the context to the viewer’s imagination. In this video we discuss some examples of paintings that are vignetted and explain the advantages of that approach.
