I have filmed videos about most of our Belfast Cemeteries and a lot of other graveyards besides but I somehow have never got round to making a film about Roselawn Cemetery Ballygowan Road Crossnacreevy, -which is just up the road from our home!
Roselawn in now the main cemetery in Belfast. It is the only remaining cemetery where new plots are still available to purchase. It covers 300 acres of beautifully manicured landscaped grounds. This makes it the largest municipal cemetery in the United Kingdom. Within the grounds are 2 lakes, the Creevy river, woodlands, an Iron age fort and a mound. The cemetery is a wildlife haven. Roselawn has Northern Irelands only crematorium. It is operated by Belfast City Council.
Roselawn Cemetery was laid out in 1952 as a ‘lawn’ cemetery and the ground was formally consecrated in 1954. Roses (traditional flowering shrubs, used extensively in cemeteries), were planted along the main driveway, giving the site its name. Lawn cemeteries do not have marked grave surrounds just headstones. this allows free access to ride on lawn mowers. The first cremation took place in July 1961. Back then few people were cremated. Now many people opt for it.
I believe it has 15000 tree plaques and approaching 50000 graves. It has been estimated that there are between 43.000 and 44.000 memorial plaques. The site contains graves connected to the Troubles, including those of police and prison officers, soldiers and victims of the Abercorn Restaurant, Oxford Street and La Mon House Hotel bombings. There are also numerous paramilitary associated graves. Each grave holds the remains of someone who was wanted and loved. Each grave contains the remains of some mother's son or daughter.
