Black Truffle is one of the most expensive fungi in the world due to its unique umami flavor. I ordered 2 Oz of black truffles from Sabatino Italy with overnight shipping so I could attempt to clone the fungi and obtain mycelium that I can use to inoculate tree sapling roots and grow my own black truffles.
The black truffles I received appeared to be fresh and edible, they were very fragrant. Following normal sterile procedure I ripped the truffle in half and transferred the inner tissue to sterilized nutrient agar plates. I also transferred the tissue from the second truffle to sterilized honey liquid culture media. All 15 agar plates failed to grow mycelium and only bacteria grew. All jars of liquid culture media also showed no signs of growth from the tissue. this indicates that the truffle was not viable upon delivery. This conclusion leads me to believe I need to fly to Italy myself and clone a truffle I find, the same day it is picked.
This won't be my only experiment with the black truffle fungi, I have other ideas I will explore soon.
