Why Bury Grape Vines?
Every spring, grape farmers in northern China pull dry, twisted vines out of the dirt and hang them back on trellises. It looks strange at first—like they’re reassembling a vineyard from scratch. But this yearly task is key to keeping the vines alive.
In northern regions, winters are too harsh for grapevines to survive above ground. So each fall, farmers bend the vines down and bury them under a layer of soil. It’s not for storage—it’s protection. The soil insulates the wood, shielding it from freezing winds and killing frost.
Once the ground thaws, it’s time to dig. Vines are carefully uncovered, checked for damage, then tied back onto wires to start growing again. It’s extra work—but without it, there’d be no grapes.
